Burkel studied medicine and physics 1975-1982 in Berlin and Munich. He has been a practicing medical doctor since 1982. He started the development of various media concepts in the mid-eighties; among others: 1988: conception and editing of the reader "Der AIDS-Komplex - Dimensionen einer Bedrohung/The AIDS Complex - Dimensions Of A Threat", 1998: Shift goes public/Mit Shift an die Börse - a interactive fundraising concept for an art space in Berlin-Mitte, 2004/2006: Project Z, Project D, Project S.
